I spent an hour or so of my afternoon joyfully swinging around a rapier inside an old machine shop soon-to-be black box theatre and new home to Atlantis Playmakers.
It rocked.
Exactly two years after I tore my ACL while rehearsing a broadsword fight and 16 months after ACL reconstruction, I picked up a sword for the first time in those same two years and, man, did it feel good.
Stage combat is dance.
I love to dance, but feel pretty awkward with swaying ass, knobby elbows and jutting knees. Stage Combat is just as choreographed, requires detailed skills, and tells a story through movement. More importantly, I don’t have to try to look beautiful, because as long as I tell the story the fight will be beautiful on its own. My physical insecurities don’t matter. They are lost in the strength of the moment.
It’s good to be back.
